find peace with organization.
Before I began my clutter-free journey, I lived a good portion of my adult life as a shop-a-holic. I had an insatiable appetite for clothing, shoes and handbags that I couldn’t afford. Hence, I found myself on any given day at any given time, in any given Filene’s Basement Department Store with in a 25 mile radius of Boston. I ate and breathed SHOPPING. I loved buying and returning and returning and buying and watching out for the “ultimate” last markdown.
It was all so wonderful or so I thought until one day I found myself in Filene’s Basement and I didn’t remember how I had gotten there. I began to realize how obtaining “things” I didn’t need, couldn’t afford and didn’t have space for had become an integral part of my life. That’s when I sought professional help.Since then I’ve dedicated my professional career to helping others with similar issues. My philosophy is very simple. With our busy lifestyles, there’s just not enough time to get things done and then life takes over. Things are never as bad as they seem. We all need help at some point, and we’re here to provide that help and support.

What is Hoarding?
Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs.
Hoarding often creates such cramped living conditions that homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter. Some people also collect animals, keeping dozens or hundreds of pets in unsanitary conditions because they can’t care for them properly.
Symptoms of Hoarding
- In the homes of people who have hoarding disorder, the counter tops, sinks, stoves, desks, stairways and virtually all other surfaces are usually stacked with stuff. And when there’s no more room inside, the clutter may spread to the garage, vehicles, and yard.
- Clutter and difficulty discarding things are usually the first signs and symptoms of hoarding disorder, which often surfaces during the teenage years. As the person grows older, he or she typically starts acquiring things for which there is no need or space. By middle age, symptoms are often severe and may be harder to treat.
- Persistent inability to part with any possession, regardless of its value.
- Excessive attachment to possessions, including discomfort letting others touch or borrow them or distress at the idea of letting an item go
- Letting food or trash build up to unusually excessive, unsanitary levels
About Hoarding Clean up
It’s personal. No matter what anyone says, allowing someone (a stranger) into your home and into your space and having that person touching your things is personal. It’s just that simple. It might even feel invasive initially. We get it. Our approach is as non-invasive as possible. We are here to help you or your loved one create a safe and sanitary living environment. Nothing is touched, tossed or handled without your permission. We will respect you and your things. Hoarding clean up can be very difficult because of the unsanitary conditions. A hazmat uniform may be needed. We may even have to take your loved one out of the home to lessen the anxiety on them.
Our ultimate goal is to help you and guide you through this transformation process in a manner that makes you feel comfortable.

We've accumulated a lot of possessions over several decades and were starting to feel lost among them. Vanessa made what had seemed like a very distasteful job almost an easy piece of work, with great rewards. I felt anxiety about undertaking the task, but Vanessa's relaxed and down-to-business attitude put me at ease right away. I know from experience that without Vanessa's help I'd had been continuously sidetracked and prone to procrastination, but she kept the work moving at a good pace. She was encouraging, non-judgmental, and easy to work with

Ms. Hogan is a hard worker, a pleasure to work with, a quick learner, and often has creative solutions for a variety of problems. Shas also helped me tremendously with a major move from one home to another. She is careful and efficient, and handled my possessions as if they were her own

I had the pleasure of working with Vanessa on several event projects over the last seven years. Vanessa is reliable, diligent, trustworthy, and committed to making the project successful. She has a special way of making the job interesting and fun for the entire team

Whether it is cleaning out a storage space, organizing files, packing up and relocating a commercial office space, and many other tasks small and large, I know that I can call Vanessa to take care of all of my needs within any time frame that my schedule requires

Vanessa Hogan has helped me solve several problems (she is utterly reliable, has a sense of humor, and is not dismayed by a person's mess). Peaceful order now reigns. Vanessa is the queen of problem solving. We give her our highest recommendation! She lifted up the appearance of our house. B. Whitesides
Vanessa knows her field and the subsequent psychological behaviors it can inflict or impose or construct. She knows what drives her clients or manipulates them; and what her clients may do that furthers their own destruction. Finally, she knows what kind of lost they are once they are trapped in the midst of their self-imposed chaos

Vanessa is truly a second pair of hands. She helped me set up the office for my new business ten years ago, and I still call on her when there is a special project that needs, well, another pair of hands. She is computer savvy, personable on the phone with customers, and has never seen a pile of papers she can’t sort out. Most of all, she is willing and able to help rearrange and reorganize, including lugging books, papers and stuff — whatever is needed to keep our organization running smoothly.

Vanessa Hogan is a top-notch professional Organizer who brings many skills to her work. She is prompt, courteous and easy to work with. When helping me prepare to move, she had an uncanny ability to easily “see” how items should be packed properly in a box, while being mindful about how to group items together to maximize use of box space - - and minimize the number of Boxes! If you’re unsure, or anxious, call Vanessa at A Second Pair of Hands!
— Nadene Vigoda, Dollars & Sense, 3/2015
I have used moved no less than five times in the past 5 years. And, to be perfectly honest, I could never have done it without Vanessa’s help. On three of these occasions, I was under an extremely tight time frame and Vanessa and her company relieved my stress. I know that there are a number of companies such as Vanessa’s out there; but, I assure you none can compare to the ability of Vanessa Hogan
Vanessa was instrumental in our move from a house we owned for 25 years to a new much smaller home. The thought of packing and/or getting rid of everything we had accumulated over the years was very depressing. She came and was able to help sort and pack and make some of the tough decisions of whether to keep or not. She took a lot of it away immediately so every time she came I felt a great sigh of relief. She was always prompt and we accomplished so much more in a day then I ever could have

Vanessa was worth her weight in gold….never getting overwhelmed at the task at hand, smiling and friendly, working diligently, when my energy was gone. I would recommend her services to anyone who is fed up looking at piles of old stuff not knowing where to begin. I am so grateful to her and am enjoying a clutter free environment because of her.

Vanessa came to my house at a critical time. I was moving out of state with only two or three days to finish what felt like a marathon run. And by the time she arrived, I felt like I wouldn't make the finish line. But she pitched in right away and before I realized it, things were happening. Boxes packed. Dishware and books, cd's and shop tools, and more, all packed with precision and little direction on my part and ready to go. She returned each day at the time she said she would and she even worked later on one key day to get the job done. I don't know how we did it - how she did so much in such a short time - but the move went on as scheduled. Thanks to Vanessa G. Mercer
